Our History

United Way was founded on a simple goal: to make our communities a better place for everyone through cooperative action. For 70 years, our United Way has connected our local communities through giving, volunteerism, and advocacy:

  • February 5, 1955: United Givers of Floyd County, Inc is incorporated, its roots tied to the Floyd County Community Chest, active since at least 1940

  • October 28, 1969: United Givers becomes United Fund of Rome & Floyd County

  • May 30, 1975: United Fund becomes United Way of Rome & Floyd County

  • April 4, 2025: Our mission grows to serve two additional counties, becoming United Way of Floyd, Polk & Chattooga

True to our founding spirit – whenever there is a need in our communities, United Way is there. We take a cooperative approach to tackling the toughest challenges, actively listening and responding to local needs through the power of partnerships and collective action. From strengthening local resilience to advancing health, youth opportunity, and financial security, we’re working towards a future where every person in our communities can thrive. Join us!

United Way began with neighbors joining hands to lift one another — that same spirit drives us to build stronger, more caring communities where everyone can thrive.
